CV Kiwanis Scholarships
Through 2022 we have given $368,700 to 324 High School graduates (202 girls and 122 boys) over a period of 44 years. Students lived in Carmel Valley but attended one of seven high schools, Carmel High School, Carmel Valley High School, Santa Catalina School, York School, Robert Lewis School, Palma High School and Notre Dame High School.
The program is named after John Scroggs who was an early advocate of scholarships when he was CV Kiwanis President. The first scholarship was awarded in 1978 for $500.00 to Amy Erickson. Randy Randazzo was president and presented this first scholarship.
Awards are based on academic excellence (3.5 GPA or above), leadership, community service, school activities and need. Since 1978 there have been various changes to the program. In 2000 John Estep became Chair of the Scholarship Committee, at that time the Orville Rogers Scholarship for a Carmel High School senior was started in honor of his contribution to education and to the scholarship program over his 22 years as Chairman.
In 2001, applicants living in Carmel Valley attending private high schools in the area were accepted along with Carmel Valley High School seniors. In 2002, a scholarship for students with special learning and/or physical challenges was added.

The program has grown over the years and is administered by very active committee members of the Kiwanis Club of Carmel Valley. Meeting several times during the year, the committee reviews criteria and procedures and interviews every qualified applicant for a scholarship. The committee members collectively approve all scholarships and the amounts of each within the total scholarship budget as approved by the Board of Directors.
Our major fundraiser for the scholarship program is the HOOPLA, a BBQ with music, a silent auction, and of course, excellent food. The event held at the C.V. Trail & Saddle Club kicks off the annual Kiwanis week of Fiesta events. |
